Artist’s Statement:

Materials

I primarily use high-fired stoneware and porcelain as I consider these to be the finest and most durable materials available. The work in this show is fired between cone 10 (2300 F) and cone 11 (2345 F). It’s an unusually high temperature to fire sculptural vessels but characteristic of the practice I have grown to love. I also primarily use reduction firing techniques in which the kiln receives only limited oxygen during the firing process. This process produces unique and diverse effects of color and tone onto the clay and glazes due to the changing atmosphere in the kiln. I find these variations aptly suited to my interest in natural sources as they also diverge from consistent and expected results.

Process

I am continually inspired by natural forms and systems. However, I see my work as an opportunity to translate these sources into something new. Recurring themes which have appeared include the tension between symmetry and variation, growth and decay, as well as representation and stylization.

The influence of functional ceramics has also made its mark. The “vessel” has become a form which represents more than a simple functional object; it also holds meaning in more metaphorical ways. Additionally the interior and exterior which defines a vessel has amplified my interest in what is internal and external in the greater world.
