OUTSIDE THE LINES: PAINTINGS BY SCOTT R. HOLLOWAY
A mini-retrospective of 50 years.
These art objects are a record of the road to self acceptance as a gay man born in a time when being Queer was considered a mental illness, to uncovering of the truth, and the gradual understanding of how it all flows maneuvering through life as a person living with Parkinsons.

"My Story (So Far)," 32" x 47", 2106 - 2018, $1,250. What started off as a painting of motion activated by the patterns of the underlying, wood grain became my story when I added a map of myself in words. In my experience with Parkinson’s, I was losing complete control of my hands.

"M (The Furies)," 2018 (NFS) (framed). Portrait of a moment of intense anger.

"Survivor’s Guilt (Self-Hatred)," 22" x 30", 1995, $750 (framed). A crucible(self-portrait) that emerged during the AIDS pandemic. Painted during a time when we watched helplessly as loved ones died. It was a time of utter self-despair. We had to find ways past it by integrating mind and body. There was nowhere to go but up.
"Summer," 24" x 24", 2010, $750. The structure begins to dissolve and concentric circles crash into each other tearing, ripping and cutting, while creating the materials to rebuild. After an initial layer of paint is applied, stripes of tape are stuck on, another layer applied and then the tape removed to reveal a chance happening. Like the collage, it is a technique that allows the artist to recreate a space.

"Queens, Skulls, and Businessmen," 17" x 37" 1975, (NFS framed). I was 17 years old the first time I saw men dressing in drag. I had taken acid, and I was enchanted, amazed and somewhat fearful as I watched from a corner, tightly holding my dog. It was an anathema to all the restrictions that I had grown up with, but I was in the midst of the Cockettes, where I learned to experience life beyond those restrictions of gender.

"Sunbather (Muse), 22" x 30, 2022, $1,150 (framed). This is the portrait of a good friend in a state of unabashed freedom.
"Buoy (At Sea)," 32" x 45", 2011 - 2023, $1,450. A battered head floating in a sick sea of our creation. In an ironic twist, the collage elements are fragments of a wood veneer painting that deterioted after being exposed to the elements.

"Spinal Float," 32" x 42", 2017, $950. Fluid movement of form and shape. I woke up during my brain surgery and saw my exposed brain in which they were installing wires and a battery which would lead to better control of my arms and hands
"Wolfee," 25" x 30", 2022, $1,150. An alter ego. The figure that came out of a collage that formed itself into a persona. The displacement is reminiscent of a Jekell and Hyde character.
